Fruit Merge Guide: How to Drop, Chain and Grow the Goal Fruit

By the Happy Life Games team · Updated October 19, 2026 · 5 min read

Fruit Merge is a drop-and-merge puzzle played inside a glass jar. You hold a fruit above the jar, slide it left or right, and let go. When two identical fruits touch, they squash together into the next fruit up the ladder: two cherries become a strawberry, two strawberries a grape, and so on. Each level names a goal, usually a specific fruit, and you win the moment you make it.

The appeal is the physics. Fruits roll, settle and nudge each other, so a single well-placed cherry can set off a chain of merges that tumbles all the way down a pile. A careless drop does the opposite and stacks fruit toward the top of the jar.

How to play

Press anywhere on the screen and drag to aim. A dashed white line shows exactly where the held fruit will fall and where it will land on the pile. Release to drop it. There is a short pause before the next fruit appears in the holder.

The fruit ladder runs Cherry, Strawberry, Grape, Orange, Apple, Pear, Peach, Pineapple, Melon and Watermelon. The strip of fruit icons near the top of the screen shows the whole ladder and highlights your target. Beside the goal card there is a NEXT card, so you always know the fruit after the one you are holding.

The red dashed line near the top of the jar is the danger line. If any fruit that has already landed stays above it for two seconds, the jar overflows and the level is lost. When this starts to happen, the offending fruit shakes and glows red and a countdown appears over the line. A merge that pulls the pile down in time cancels the danger.

Beneath the goal you will also see a drop counter, such as 4/6. That second number is the par for three stars. It is only a bonus target. You can take as many drops as you like as long as the jar doesn't overflow.

Beginner strategy

  1. Drop onto a match. Before releasing, find the fruit of the same type that's closest to the surface and line the dashed guide up with it. Merges are what keep the jar low.
  2. Check NEXT before you commit. If you're holding a cherry and the next fruit is also a cherry, you can drop the first one somewhere quiet and plan to land the second on top of it.
  3. Keep small fruit on top. A cherry trapped under an apple is stuck until the apple leaves. Try to grow the pile with larger fruit below and smaller fruit above, so new drops can reach the small ones.
  4. Use the walls. Fruits resting against the side of the jar are stable. Building a ladder of sizes along one wall gives you a predictable place to chain merges.

On the early levels there's a gentle pull between matching fruits that land close together, which helps nearly-touching pairs connect. That help fades out as you progress, so it's worth learning to aim precisely from the start.

Advanced techniques

Find the combo tower

Level 3 introduces the combo tower, and it returns regularly afterward. Somewhere in the jar, usually leaning against a wall, there's a column of fruit stacked in descending order, for example an apple, then an orange, a grape, a strawberry and a cherry on top. Drop a cherry on that top cherry and the whole column merges in sequence, one step after another. These levels often place a lone cherry in the middle of the jar as a decoy. It's the obvious target, but the tower is the real one.

Think about where the new fruit appears

A merged fruit appears between the two fruits that formed it, and it's larger than either. That growth pushes neighbors around. Before a big merge, picture the bigger fruit swelling in place. If it will shove a fruit above the danger line or bury a small fruit you need, try a different drop.

Merge beside rocks

From level 5, gray rocks sit in the jar. Rocks never merge, and you can't drop anything that removes them directly. A rock is smashed when a merge happens right next to it. The trick is to set up a pair beside the rock and complete it there. The goal card counts how many rocks are left.

Collect golden fruit

Level 8 adds a golden fruit with a glowing ring and a small crown. It behaves like a normal fruit of its type, and you collect it by merging it with a matching fruit. Look at what type it is and feed it that type, ideally from directly above.

Thaw frozen fruit

From level 12, some fruits are encased in ice. A frozen fruit won't merge with anything, even a perfect match. Make any merge right beside it and the ice breaks, after which it acts like a normal fruit. Frozen fruit is often exactly the size you need for the goal, so plan to thaw it early.

Common mistakes

What changes in later levels

The first dozen levels each teach one idea: plain merging, combo towers, rocks, golden fruit and ice. After that, each level mixes one of these ideas with a fuller jar. Goals climb to a Pear, and later to a Peach. Some levels swap the fruit goal for a score target, where each merge is worth more points the bigger the resulting fruit. Every tenth level is a peak that asks for one fruit higher than usual and adds a second element, such as rocks plus a golden fruit. The level after a peak is a lighter one built around a combo tower.

FAQ

What does the hint button do?

It moves your aim to a suggested spot and shows a yellow guide line and a pointing hand for the fruit you're holding. Release to take the suggestion, or ignore it and aim elsewhere.

Is there an undo?

No. Physics makes every drop final, which is why it pays to check the guide line and the NEXT card first. You can restart the level at any time.

What happens when the jar overflows?

The level ends. The result screen lets you retry, or continue, which removes the six smallest ordinary fruits from the jar so you can keep going.

Can I skip a level?

Yes. The skip button moves you on if a jar has you stuck. For a merge puzzle with no physics at all, try 2048 Merge, or read how merge games work.
